Keeping students' attention and commitment has become a challenge for teachers, as gamification has gained particular importance in the classroom through various variants, such as escape rooms. This study aimed to analyze whether the use of this methodology enhances the motivation and learning of university students. To achieve this objective and following the PRISMA method, a systematic review was conducted, searching through the Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases. The inclusion criteria were established as articles that had a control group and used quantitative measures to assess the effects on learning and motivation. Finally, a total of eight studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. The results revealed that the appropriate use of escape rooms in the university context can have significant effects on student learning and lead to positive implications for student motivation. In conclusion, an overview of the characteristics of escape rooms in the educational setting and the potential effects on learning processes was provided.
